Some BACK SAVING tips in my next few posts.
So many people with bad backs at the moment due to gardening!!
1.When gardening, remember to take regular breaks from those back breaking positions you find yourself in! At least every 20 minutes.
2. Try to avoid bending your back (this can put strain on your lower back especially when held for any length of time). When possible, keep your back straight and fold at the hips and knees instead. Kneel down with a straight back or crouch rather than bend down – but not for longer than a few minutes at a time!
3. Take care when lifting and carrying heavy items. Ideally get some help to lighten the load. If you must carry something heavy keep it close to your body and keep your back straight as you place it down. Avoid twisting your back when lifting and lowering the item too.
4. Do some gentle Pilates for 10 minutes after you finish to help rebalance your body and ease the aches and pains. (see earlier posts – Knee Circles, Spine Curls, Cat, Side Reach, Waist Twists and Baby Cobra)
